The Labour Party has a proud tradition of serving the people of Gateshead. Our Labour MPs fight in Westminster for policies which improve life for Gateshead people – the National Minimum Wage, more local doctors, nurses and teachers and the protection of tax credits and pensions. Our Labour Council is widely regarded as delivering excellent services in difficult circumstances and has overseen nationally important initiatives, such as the Sage, the Baltic and the Angel of the North.
We are keen to welcome new members and encourage debate discussion and activity. We run regular street stalls and campaign sessions, and encourage all members to play as full a role as they wish. Members have a real chance to influence policy – eg, a few years ago one member pushed for a Living Wage, which was then debated by local members and local councillors. It is now Gateshead Council policy, and when implemented will improve the lives of many low paid workers. Another example of member influence related to Houses of Multiple Occupation, which led to a change in legislation in Westminster.
